MEGAN ABUBO WINS WOMEN'S VANS TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING!
December 14, 2007 - Maui -- After a decade of trying, Hawaii's Megan Abubo has clinched the coveted Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title following her quarter final finish in the third and final event - the Billabong Pro Maui - that concluded at Honolua Bay today.
This prestigious award is bestowed each winter upon the surfer who performs the strongest throughout all three of the Triple Crown big-wave events. Abubo won the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa, reached the semi-finals of the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach before being carried from the beach with a rib injury, then placed equal fifth in Maui today.
It was a dream come true for Megan, 29, whose hopes of clinching the Triple Crown title all but vaporized when she departed the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach in an ambulance. While she didn't break any ribs, she severely strained her muscles and ligaments and was forced to endure intense pain to see this final event through.
"I didn't even surf once between getting injured and my first heat here in Maui," said Abubo. "Every time I paddle it feels like my ribs are separting. Standing up is even more painful and the smaller the waves got, the worse it felt. These last two days with smaller surf were really tough."
"It's kind of surreal, especially if you've had a heat like mine," Abubo continued. "It just was not coming together for me in the quarters. Layne was going out and all she had to do was make that heat. If she can't win a world title, you know she wants to win the Triple Crown. I went home, I couldn't even watch it.
"Winning at home at Haleiwa in the beginning of the series gave me a lot of confidence. After that, there was not as much pressure to qualify (for the World Tour). Injuring myself somehow just motivated me here. Usually here in Maui I'm just thinking I have a jinx here. I've never made it past the third round in this event. So in a weird way, the injury has been a bit of a blessing.
"I feel like I'm surfing the best I've ever surfed in my career. I'm going to give next year a really good shot for the world title. I feel like my surfing up there I want to give it everything I've got." Along with the prestige of the title, Abubo Triple Crown trophy today was a limited edition Chevy Colorado truck.
"It's definitely staying in the family," Abubo said. "That's what we do in Hawaii. It's such a huge prize. Every morning I'd see the one parked at Sunset and I'd say 'oooohh, I want that'. My sister rang me this-morning to tell me not to forget the truck!"
December 10, 2007 - Hawaiian Island Creations would like to welcome its newest team riders to the ohana. (left) Josh Moniz, Micah Moniz, Kelia Moniz, and Isiah Moniz. This isn't a "type -o" they are all siblings. How can talent run so deep you ask? These talented groms are the children of big wave surfing legend Tony Moniz.
Haleiwa, Oahu, Hawaii - (November 9, 2007) - Congratulations to Hawaii's Joel Centeio, winner of the 2007 Xcel Pro Presented by No Fear! Centeio maintained his smooth, collected style through early and later rounds and stepped it up during the exciting, down-to-the-wire final heat. Needing only a 3.40 to overtake Mason Ho in first, Centeio capitalized, turning in a 7.77 ride that sealed the deal. Centeio's final two-wave score came in at 16.10, thanks to an earlier 8.33 charge. "This win feels insane - it's such a huge relief," said Centeio during the awards ceremony on the beach. "I've been waiting for a big win since turning pro six years ago. I had a feeling it was going to come today." Centeio takes home $10,000 for the title, as well as 1,500 points towards his WQS rating.
